Eternal Damnation

by Gowri Bhargav

Year 3000

The sky is a raging inferno harboring vicious storms. Every tree in the parched landscape is reduced to a skeletal silhouette against the somber landscape. The earth appears barren and more like a hellhole. Having formed a totalitarian government the Martians have enslaved every last human being on the earth.

Everyday I witness brutality being meted out to people who have managed to thrive–men, women, children. Those failing to obey orders are being pushed into sinkholes or scorched amidst the flowing lava. I have seen my own family, friends and several generations being subjected to the most torturous treatments.

There isn’t a single day I have’nt regretted my decision–a decision that changed the fate of humanity. Once a renowned scientist, I had planned to annihilate the problems prevalent but as time passed I was overcome by greed. I signed a pact with the Martians to conquer Earth in return for my eternal consciousness. I gave them the coordinates of the much guarded gateway.

I mocked the laws of nature while I was playing God. Alas! It’s been more than fifty years since I was pronounced dead clinically but I don’t feel dead…

My brain has been preserved and revived by wiring it to a machine over which I have no control now. It has been a curse to watch all my loved ones perish as I stay with every painful memory intact. I have chosen a path of eternal damnation from which there is no exit.
