Poetry that doesn’t follow any strict rhyme scheme or meter is called free verse. Free verse encompasses a wide range of poetic devices and also allows the poets to have the complete freedom to improvise and be creative in constructing their poems. The poems can be of any length, use enjambments, line breaks, rhythms in speech or any other element to express thoughts effectively.
Walt Whitman is said to be the father of Free verse poetry though there are other poets who have written in this form before him.

Here’s a free verse poem about ‘free verse’ written by me;
FREE VERSE
I can’t be tethered or caged by rules,
I’m not structured, metered or bound by rhymes,
I have a mind of my own, I decide my journey,
I set my own rhythm, the ones who understand shall comprehend,
Sometimes I’m calm , flowing like a river gentle
With words succinct I express volumes,
And sometimes I’m untamed spreading like a wildfire
Into a cataclysmic deluge I transform spanning pages several,
Some call me reckless, far from the designated realms of accepted structures,
But uncharted is my course, I defy boundaries,
I give wings to emotions hidden in crevices deep,
Giving a voice to the voiceless,
Ushering those trying to shed the inhibition of penning verses,
I’m free verse, maneuvering to fill all evident gaps
Across the rigid world of poetry, in ways contemporary
yet delivering messages profound by setting you free.
