Her World

by Gowri Bhargav

Every morning with the rise of dawn,

She watches the sky second by second,

Notes the changing hues

Bronze

Amber

Orange

Yellow

–Oft staring in oblivion.

During the day as her mother cooks,

She listens to the different sounds;

Peel

Grate

Dice

Chop

And then

Swish

Swosh

Sizzle

Whistle

Beep

Ding

–Oft staring in oblivion.

At school as her teacher teaches,

The numbers and words in the blackboard;

Dance

Wiggle

Hop

Jump

She shakes her head- nod, nod, nod

–Oft staring in oblivion

Out in the park as she sits on the lush grass watching her friends play,

She admires the changing shapes of passing clouds;

Rabbit

Dragon

Castle

Elf

Sometimes chasing the fluttering butterflies,

Sometimes blowing a stray dandelion,

–And oft staring in oblivion.

She registers–every mesmerizing shade of eventide,

Every song that the birds sing,

The noisy town and how it goes quiet,

The shadows that dance in the fading light,

Counting stars that adorn the celestial sky,

Until the retiring day bids goodbye.

And then in solitude sitting in a cozy nook,

She draws vivid sketches in her ornate notebook.

People oft wonder why her mind drifts,

Unaware about the million words that her mind sifts,

Crossing realms she finds her bliss,

She is far away from being named foolish.
