I See You

by Gowri Bhargav

Theme : Write a poem from the perspective of a non-human creature or object.

When you were young you always loved me

Enamored you were, you’d surely agree,

You spent hours staring at me,

I smiled at you and you were happy.

Into a woman you blossomed, no more carefree,

Troubled you seemed with your changing body,

Your dwindling self-worth I could see,

Hidden beneath all masks pretty.

Tormented by the standards of beauty,

You shed tears frequently,

Your flabs and curves, you failed to embrace,

How you disliked your aging face.

Remember! As your lifelong friend, I never lie,

The stark truth I never defy,

Timeless is the soul, the body wilts, My dear!

Ephemeral is life, there’s nothing to fear.
