Yashoda’s Song to Krishna

by Gowri Bhargav

Theme : Your eyes speak to me

In your shimmering eyes I drown hopelessly,

Delving in all the stories they seem to tell,

Galaxies infinite in your eyes I see.

Your mischievousness makes me angry,

Though I’m aware of the several lies you try to sell,

In your shimmering eyes I drown hopelessly,

How you trick me effortlessly,

You cast everyone under your enchanting spell,

Galaxies infinite in your eyes I see.

Your innocence melts my heart instantly,

When you smile all my worries quell,

In your shimmering eyes I drown hopelessly,

With your exuberance you make Vrindavan happy,

Holding the wheel of time even the future you can foretell,

Galaxies infinite in your eyes I see.

O Krishna! You are synonymous to infinity,

Singing your praise, with pride my heart does swell,

In your shimmering eyes I drown hopelessly,

Galaxies infinite in your eyes I see.

The Villanelle is known for its repeated lines and a refrain. It consists of five tercets and a quatrain (6 stanzas or 19 lines in total). The form is expressed this way:

A1 b A2 (1st tercet)

a b A1 (2nd tercet)

a b A2 (3rd tercet)

a b A1 (4th tercet)

a b A2 (5th tercet)

a b A1 A2 (a quatrain; last stanza-serves as the poemโ€™s concluding lines)

The capitals are for the refrains and lowercase letters are for the rhymes.
